The terrorists, armed with guns and machetes, fled from their overturned Audi A3 after ploughing into pedestrians in the seafront town.
One of the officers, seeing the men fleeing, began firing his gun and took down four of the attackers.
A fifth fled in another direction ran into a park and was gunned down minutes later by a policeman.

Catalan police have confirmed Moussa Oukabir, Said Aallaa and Mohamed Hychami were killed by officers. Abouyaaqoub is as yet unaccounted for.

“Then he got up — like the Undertaker on WWF.
“He came back up like a zombie. He was still talking, laughing and taunting the police.
“They shot at him again and he went down.”
Catalan police chief Josep Luis Trapero confirmed a single officer, who was meant to be on holiday, killed four of the terrorists and said: "To kill four people, even if you are a professional, is not easy to digest."
He added that the officer was now receiving counselling.
The attackers hit four pedestrians in their car before slamming into the police car, injuring an officer.
The video shows the moment the "smirking" terrorist in a fake suicide vest was shot dead by police as he taunted officers after ploughing a car into pedestrians in Cambrils.

Chilling footage shows the suspect collapsing as shots blast out before he somehow manages to get back up.

The fifth suspect reportedly ran towards a park where he was gunned down by a separate police officer.
Dad-of-one Fitzroy said the jihadist - one of five slain by cops last night - was taunting the police and smiling as they opened fire.
The 54-year-old, from Wolverhampton, said: "We were sitting at the beach bar having something to eat when some girls ran in with fear on their faces and I saw people running down the street.
"I got up and saw a guy standing on the grass at the edge of the beach about 25 feet away. He had something that looked silvery over his body which could have been a suicide vest and was holding something in his hand.
"He was shouting something in a language I did not understand and somebody shouted police and around 30 seconds later four officers jumped out of a car and came between me and him.
"They had their guns drawn and were shouting at the guy. That is when I knew this was for real.
"The next thing there were about ten shots, crack, crack, crack, like a pop gun and he fell to the ground but two seconds later he stood back up again and stepped over a fence from the grass onto the street and came at the police.
"They were backing off and he was smiling at them as he charged towards them.
"He was behaving strangely, like he was on drugs. Ranting and raving as he went up and down the street.
"Then they fired again and he fell down. This time he stayed down.
"It was like watching a horror film, particularly when he jumped back up after being shot and started laughing at the police. I can't get that out of my mind.
"He must have been on something after taking that many shots."
