One of the officers, seeing the men fleeing, began firing his gun and took down four of the attackers.

A fifth fled in another direction ran into a park and was gunned down minutes later by a policeman.

The fifth terrorist ran into a park and was gunned down minutes later by another officer.

The attacker managed to get back on his feet and ran at armed officers who eventually needed 15 bullets to kill him.

The  fiend waved a knife as he fled and  stabbed a Spanish woman aged 61 in the neck, who later died.

Catalan police have confirmed Moussa Oukabir, Said Aallaa and Mohamed Hychami were killed by officers. Abouyaaqoub is as yet unaccounted for.

Witness Fitzroy Davies said: “They shot him — up to  10 shots were fired — and he fell to the ground.
“Then he got up — like the Undertaker on WWF.
“He  came back up like a zombie. He was still talking, laughing  and taunting the police.
“They shot at him again and he went down.”

Catalan police chief Josep Luis Trapero confirmed a single officer, who was meant to be on holiday, killed four of the terrorists and said: "To kill four people, even if you are a professional, is not easy to digest."

He added that the officer was now receiving counselling.

The attackers hit four pedestrians in their car before slamming into the police car, injuring an officer.

The jihadis rampaged through the coastal town armed with axes and knives - with one stabbing a pedestrian in the face, police confirmed.

They wore fake suicide vests made from Coke cans as they caused terror on the streets.

El Pais, quoting police sources, reports that driver of the Rambla attack van is one of the terrorists who was gunned down.

British tourist Fitzroy Davies was at a beachfront restaurant in the coastal resort when the horror unfolded last night.

Chilling footage shows the suspect collapsing as shots blast out before he somehow manages to get back up.

Cops shoot again and the suspect finally falls apparently dead on a pedestrian crossing.

It has since emerged that a hero female police officer shot dead four of the five terrorists as she saved her injured partner's life.

The fifth suspect reportedly ran towards a park where he was gunned down by a separate police officer.

Dad-of-one Fitzroy said the jihadist - one of five slain by cops last night - was taunting the police and smiling as they opened fire.

The 54-year-old, from Wolverhampton, said: "We were sitting at the beach bar having something to eat when some girls ran in with fear on their faces and I saw people running down the street.

"I got up and saw a guy standing on the grass at the edge of the beach about 25 feet away. He had something that looked silvery over his body which could have been a suicide vest and was holding something in his hand.

"He was shouting something in a language I did not understand and somebody shouted police and around 30 seconds later four officers jumped out of a car and came between me and him.

"They had their guns drawn and were shouting at the guy. That is when I knew this was for real.

"The next thing there were about ten shots, crack, crack, crack, like a pop gun and he fell to the ground but two seconds later he stood back up again and stepped over a fence from the grass onto the street and came at the police.

"They were backing off and he was smiling at them as he charged towards them.

"He was behaving strangely, like he was on drugs. Ranting and raving as he went up and down the street.

"Then they fired again and he fell down. This time he stayed down.

"It was like watching a horror film, particularly when he jumped back up after being shot and started laughing at the police. I can't get that out of my mind.

"He must have been on something after taking that many shots."

Four people - three Moroccans and one Spaniard have been arrested following the horror -but police say they have no known backgrounds in terrorism.

Driss Oukabir, 28, was declared a suspect by Spanish police after it was revealed the van was rented in his name.

Spanish media claims he handed himself in to police after seeing his face on news reports.

  • At least four men with no background in terrorism have been arrested in connection with the attack including Driss Oukabir - a 28-year-old Moroccan who is believed to have rented the van. His brother Moussa Oukabir, 17, stole his ID and is suspected to be the van driver
  • Victims are from 35 countries. A seven-year-old British boy is feared to be among the victims as Theresa May says she is "urgently" looking into reports
  • Eight hours later, one person was killed and seven injured after five terrorists carry out second terror attack in Cambrils - 68 miles from Barcelona
  • Jihadists wearing fake suicide vests rammed an Audi A3 into pedestrians and were shot dead by police when the car flipped
  • One of the five terrorists, who were armed with knives and axes, killed in Cambrils could have been the driver of the van which killed 13 people in Barcelona
  • Officials are linking the attacks with an explosion that killed one person at a house 124 miles away from Las Ramblas on Wednesday as it emerges the terrorists could have been part of a cell involving eight to 12 people

It has been reported Oukabir denied blame and told investigating officers his brother Moussa, 17, stole his ID.
