He has since been taken to hospital where he is in a stable condition.

Witnesses said they saw a man escape from the boot of a black Volkswagen Passat as it sped along Sale Road, with police following.

The injured man, whose age is not known, managed to get out of the vehicle at around 3pm, as it headed towards Princess Parkway.

An eyewitness said the man was cared for by staff at a nearby doctors' surgery until the ambulance service and more police officers arrived.

He said: “On Sale Road there is a large police presence at the moment, it is all sealed off.

“There was a car driving 80mph with police not far behind it.”

Greater Manchester Police confirmed it was investigating a vicious assault following a "kidnapping".

A spokesman added: “At around 2.55pm, police were called by the ambulance service to Wythenshawe Road, Brooklands, to reports that a man had been stabbed.

“Initial enquiries established the man had been assaulted and kidnapped in Sale Moor a short time earlier.
