Illegal immigrant hiding in lorry leaps out on pensioner’s car bonnet… and lands him £1,000 repair bill
Police asked Richard Morcombe, 67, for help after he called them after seeing migrants trying to break out of a lorry, but his assistance has hit him in the pocket
A PENSIONER who helped catch five illegal immigrants hiding in a lorry faces a £1,000 bill after one leapt out on his car bonnet.
Richard Morcombe, 67, dialled 999 when he and his wife Jan spotted a hand hanging out of the side curtain of the HGV as they drove along the M20 in Kent.
He was told to follow in his £50,000 Mercedes CLK and called in updates before pulling up behind the vehicle as police stopped it near Ashford.
Richard said two men jumped out and fled but a third landed on his car, leaving two big dents.
Richard, of Gillingham, has been quoted £1,000 for repairs.
He said: “Kent Police told me to claim on my insurance.
"It’s terrible considering I helped them catch them.”
A police spokesman said the force appreciated public assistance but added: “Any claim for damages caused by others is not the responsibility of Kent Police.”
