But he is now living back in Oswestry, Shropshire, where he has a £500,000 home.

He was spotted shopping at a local Sainsbury’s with his wife Ann in a luxury £50,000 BMW. He later embraced a male relative and visited his mum’s house.

Pals say Trevor, now using his single surname Rees, earned a fortune as security director for oil services giant Halliburton in Houston, Texas.

One friend said: “He had an important job and as far as I know they gave him a promotion which meant them all moving to America.

“He let his barn out and remains very popular round here.

"He has done really well for himself and no one would begrudge him that.”

Dad-of-two Rees was working for Mohamed Al-Fayed at the time of the fatal crash.

He was travelling with Princess Diana and her Harrods heir lover Dodi Fayed when their Mercedes smashed into a pillar.

French driver Henri Paul, Diana and Dodi were all killed while Trevor suffered severe brain and chest injuries. Every bone in his face was broken.

He spent ten days in a coma and surgeons used 150 pieces of titanium to rebuild his face, using family photos as a guide.

Trevor returned to England and quit his job with Mr Al-Fayed the next year.

He was interviewed four times by French authorities but said he could not recall the crash.

He later took a security job with the UN in East Timor and has also worked in danger zones including Iraq, Nigeria and Kurdistan.

Another friend said: “What happened to Trevor in 1997 feels like another life now.

"He’s moved on from that time working for Al-Fayed and is living a new life.”
