Today’s sunshine saw fashion conscious racegoers show off their dresses, jumpsuits and suits as they took to the stands at Glorious Goodwood.

Women took to the course in their finest frocks and hats while the men looked sharp in suits as they all arrived for a day of gambling on the horses.

The racing event is set to last for the week and is billed as one of the highlights of the flat season.

Wednesday will see Ladies Day with today’a highlight the newest Group 1, the Qatar Goodwood Cup worth £500,000.

Security was tight as armed police patrolled the grounds in the Sussex countryside.

Guests are told to “express themselves” with organisers saying: “Goodwood is about dressing up but expressing yourself at the same time; it's smart but never stuffy - take the joy of fashion and run with it.”

Organisers add: "With its position as one of the largest race meetings in the world, the Qatar Goodwood Festival is a spectacle that has to be experienced. Elegant fashion combined with some of the greatest races in the world create a festival week like no other."

But they do warn: “Bare chests and fancy dress are not allowed in any enclosure. Gentlemen are also discouraged from wearing shorts and sleeveless tops in the Gordon Enclosure.”
