Luckily, three doctors were on board the flight from Colombia to Frankfurt and were able to safely deliver the baby in the skies.

He was touchingly named Nikolai after one of the medics who brought him into the world.

The plane landed at Manchester Airport at around 1pm where the baby and mum Desislava were taken to receive specialist care at Wythenshawe Hospital.

Captain of the flight, Kurt Mayer, said: ";Aside from the birth of my own son, this was the most moving moment of my life.

"After landing, I immediately went to the mother and the newborn child to welcome him to the world."
The 38-year-old Bulgarian mum began to go into Labour at around 9pm on Tuesday.

Passengers were moved to the front of the plane as the back became a make shift delivery room.

Head flight attendant Carolin van Osch said: "The passengers applauded and were just happy that everything went well. On behalf of the crew, I would like to thank the doctors who helped make this possible, and we wish the family all the best."

A spokeswoman for the airline said: “Lufthansa can confirm that a passenger gave birth to a baby on board during the flight LH543 from Bogotá on the way to Frankfurt.

“The mother and the newborn were safely de-boarded from the aircraft by an ambulance and taken to a local hospital where they are being cared for.

“The flight was operated with an Airbus A340-300 with 191 passengers on board.

A spokeswoman for Manchester Airport said the flight was delayed by just over an hour for the unscheduled landing.

She said: "The plane landed at Manchester Airport at about 1.10pm, after the woman gave birth on board.”

Some airlines don't allow women to travel on board in the latter stages of their pregnancy, but policies vary across airlines.

In April, air hostesses and passengers helped a woman give birth on a Turkish Airlines flight from Conakry, Guinea to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
