Speaking in the BBC Radio 4 election special, Ms Thornberry was grilled over her boss’s leadership qualities.

She told presenter Anne McElvoy she thought it was “ironic” Theresa May went into the election using the “strong and stable” slogan.

She said: “That describes Jeremy very well. He is very strong and stable, some would say pig headed, but he certainly knows what he wants and he gets on with it.”

Quizzed about his headstrong tendencies, she went on: “There are certain times when you’re talking to Jeremy and it’s fine.
