Spin doc walks out after blasting President for appointment of longtime fan as communications director

The embattled spin doctor — who had a bullish relationship with with the media — stepped down with immediate effect to be replaced by his former deputy Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

He reportedly told the President that he strongly disagreed with the appointment of Wall Street financier Anthony Scaramucci as communications director this morning.

Spicer said that he believed the appointment made at 10am local time was a major mistake, according to sources who spoke to various US news outlets and agencies.

Scaramucci, a longtime Trump supporter, is expected to begin his new role in August after leaving Export-Import Bank.

He had earlier been offered the post of US ambassador to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris

Spicer had been serving a dual role as press secretary and communications director since May when former comms boss Michael Dubke resigned.

It comes as the White House deals with questions around a special counsel probe and several congressional investigations into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and potential collusion with Trump's campaign.

Spicer's brief stint in the post, which he took up immediately after Trump's inauguration, has been marked by controversy since day one.

In his first press briefing he scathed journalists for reporting that crowd numbers to see the new President being sworn in were lower than recent ceremonies.

His brisk approach to press questions spawned a spoof character on US comedy show Saturday Night Live played by Melissa McCarthy.

Spicer was also ridiculed after hiding in the bushes around the White House to avoid being seen on camera after Trump fired FBI director James Comey in May.

But the devout Catholic had remained loyal to the President – despite being snubbed for a visit with Trump to meet the Pope.

A US television reporter was said to have had the door slammed in his face when asking Spicer about the appointment of Scaramucci on Friday, shortly before he quit.
