Man, 27, murdered his brother and injured his girlfriend after dousing them in petrol and setting them on fire in New Year’s Day horror

Blair Logan was also accused of attempted murder and assault to severe injury and danger of life by prosecutors

A MAN has pleaded guilty to murdering his younger brother by dousing him in petrol before burning down their family home on New Year's Day.

Blair Logan, 27, admitted to pouring petrol onto his brother Cameron, and the 23-year-old's girlfriend Rebecca Williams, as the couple slept after returning from a January 1 party.

The 27-year-old was said to have had a "hostile relationship" with his brother - but the court heard he told police "I didn't want to kill him".

Defence lawyer Shelagh McCall QC told the High Court in Glasgow that Logan showed "wicked recklessness" but did not intend to kill his brother.

He was said to have "felt physically sick at the whole thing".

The attack was said to be in retaliation for a recent incident at the house in Milngavie, near Glasgow when his brother had punched him.

Psychology graduate Cameron died in the blaze after returning from a party with Bex, of Fife, early on New Year’s Day this year.

Bex spent three weeks in hospital fighting for her life after being hauled from the flames by Cameron’s dad David.

Logan, 27, pleaded guilty to a charge of murder and attempted murder at the High Court in Glasgow.

He was also charged with endangering the lives of his parents David and Catherine, both 54, who had suffered smoke inhalation in the fire.

The family dog Gomez was also killed in the blaze.

Logan has been subject to two psychiatric reports which concluded there was not sufficient evidence for a plea of diminished responsibility.

Ms McCall said there were "unusual traits" in Logan's personality and that he had a lack of understanding of the impact of his actions on other people.

Lady Scott asked for a social worker report and set a sentencing date for August 11 at the High Court in Livingston.

“He had such a big personality, but with a sensitive soul. And he was so funny and kind.

“He had an amazing ability to make people smile and feel good about themselves.

“He was always trying to improve himself and expand his horizons, something I really admired in him.

“He’d finished university with his best ever marks in his final exams, and wanted to join the police to become a detective. I have no doubt he would have achieved it.

“I am so proud to have been his girlfriend. He was the love of my life.”
