Special Constables could be given TASERS to defend themselves under new anti-terror plans

SPECIAL constables and new police recruits could be trained to carry Tasers under anti-terror plans.

The College of Policing is considering the move to ensure officers can protect themselves following a wave of atrocities.

But they would have to show “effective conflict management” and decision-making skills, endorsed by their manager, before being trained.

And final approval for probationers or volunteers to carry the weapon would need to be given by the Home Secretary.

One senior officer said cops had to be able “to end an attack quickly”.

Last month, Met Police announced almost 2,000 tasers would be issued to frontline personnel, bringing the total number of trained cops to more than 6,400.

Alex Marshall, chief executive of The College of Policing said: "Policing in 2017 is becoming ever more challenging and complex and chief officers must balance the traditions we have with the need to protect the public and their officers.

"For the few forces who told us they do anticipate such a requirement, the college has agreed to look at the best way for this to happen and examine any potential for specials to be trained in this area."

The suggestion of arming special constables with Tasers has also shed light on the arming police officers around the country.

A review will also be launched to consider whether unarmed officers in tourist hotspots should be armed.

Westminster attacker Khalid Masood and the London Bridge terrorists were shot dead as armed cops brought the atrocities to an end.
