In the space normally reserved for a vehicle’s registration number was the rude phrase followed by the letters EK.

Lisa, of nearby Rainham, said: “I was really shocked.

“I just couldn’t believe it.”

Lisa, who had popped out to buy food for her pet fish, told how she risked being fined over the incident after lunch on Monday.

She said: “I could have got a parking ticket. It’s terrible.”

The furious motorist immediately called Havering Council's dedicated parking office but couldn't get through.

A council spokesman said: "We can assure you that our parking machines would never deliberately produce a ticket with an expletive.

"This happened after someone tampered with the machine in what was probably considered a silly joke."

The spokesman suspects a prankster tapped in the four-letter abuse just before Lisa pitched up to use the machine.

But enough space was left over to take the start of her registration plate which started with the letters EK.

Lisa, however, retorted: "I just can't see that.

"Car registrations don't have nine letters - they have seven."
