BOYS who wore skirts to school in a mass protest after being banned from wearing shorts have forced the school to change uniform policy.

Scores of schoolboys from Isca Academy in Exeter, Devon borrowed skirts from female classmates after teachers said they couldn't wear shorts during the heatwave.

Photos of the lads in skirts at school went viral and they were praised by pupils' parents and teachers alike.

Now the school has said they will make amendments to the uniform policy - allowing boys to wear shorts in the next academic year.

Head Aimee Mitchell said they will be allowed to wear PE kit if the heatwave returns to Devon this term and smart grey shorts will be part of the official uniform next year.

She told parents in a letter: "I would like to confirm that tailored charcoal grey shorts will be part of the summer uniform from the next academic year as an optional alternative.

"This will not be permitted on an ad hoc basis. Students will be required to wear either their full PE kit or their uniform, not a combination of both."

Parents had previously blasted the school's strict uniform policy after one boy 'nearly fainted'.

The boys organised the protest - and the teachers praised them.

The head teacher added: "The overriding message was the initiative and resourcefulness of our students, and the good spirit in which they expressed their views.

"I feel they were great ambassadors for the Academy and we feel proud that our school fosters independent and lateral thinking young people."

Of the protest one lad claimed “hundreds” of boys were wearing skirts today in defiance.

Another said he had been told to remove his skirt because he had “hairy legs”, before shaving them in protest.

He told a DevonLive reporter: “It was showing some thigh. It wasn’t even that small.”
