Mum left retching when she bites into Tesco apricot to find maggots crawling inside – and the fruit was within its Use By date

Shocked Holly Griffin had only bought the fruit hours earlier at a store in Shepton Mallets, Somerset

A MUM was left retching when she bit into a Tesco apricot to find it teeming with MAGGOTS.

Holly Griffin, 27, had only bought the box from her local store just hours earlier.

The 69p bunch still had three days before its Use By date of June 4 when she picked it up on Saturday afternoon.

But when she tucked into the fruit at home in Shepton Mallets, Somerset, she was horrified when she spotted it brimming with larvae.

"I actually tried to make myself sick in the toilet," she told The Sun. "I was worried it could have poisoned me."

Mum-of-two Holly added: "I cut open another one and it was completely rotten inside. I chucked them in the bin right away.

It was just horrible. I don't know how Tesco can sell food like that. Their quality control must not be very good.

"I've got two children, a four-year-old and a seven-month-old. It could have made them or anyone else very sick if they had eaten them. It's just not right."

She also claimed it was not the first time she bought rotten food from Tesco.

"I bought grapes from them recently and they were rotten days before their use by date", she said.

"I definitely won't be shopping at Tesco again after this."

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We have robust food quality processes in place during the preparation and packaging of our products, so we were surprised to hear about this issue.

"We will be looking into this with our supplier to understand what happened.”
