A CASH-strapped police force has sparked fury by blowing £750 for gay pride rainbow colours on two patrol cars.

Top brass said the motors, which are emblazoned with the word Pride, showed that the force was supportive and open-minded.

But a picture of one of the cars proudly tweeted by Inspector Mark Evans caused an angry backlash.

Twitter user Josh Watkins stormed: “I’m gay. This is embarrassing.

“If you can afford to do this, you’re obviously still too bloated and deserve further budget cuts."

Chris Berks said: “I'm not sure the LGBT community are gonna come running just because some copper’s driving round in a rainbow car.”

George Elvidge said: “As a former police officer I cringe at what the police has become." One of the cars will be at the Brighton and Hove Pride parade in August.

The force said: “Sussex Police play a large role in the policing of Pride.

“We also feel it is important to promote LGBT equality within our local communities.”
