Boris Johnson slammed over footage of him shooting down Labour rival who quizzed him on fire service cuts

BORIS Johnson was slammed yesterday after a video of him telling a rival who quizzed him on fire service cuts to “get stuffed” resurfaced.

The former Mayor of London was filmed during a debate in 2013 with Labour Assembly member Andrew Dismore.

When accused of “lying to the people of London” by Dismore top Tory Johnson retorted: “Get stuffed.”

In 2014 - under Johnson - ten London stations closed their doors for the last time as part of a drive to make £45 million worth of savings.

The footage of Foreign Secretary Johnson has been widely shared on social media in the of the Grenfell Tower block blaze.

During the meeting Mr Dismore asks Mr Johnson: “How can cutting fire stations, cutting fire engines, cutting firefighters' posts not be a reduction in fire coverage?”

Boris replies: “Because we are improving fire coverage as I have said several times, by continuing to reduce deaths from fire and continuing to reduce the incidence of fire. That is the name of the game.”

Mr Dinsmore adds: “You've lied to the people of London in your election.”

Mr Johnson replies: “Oh, get stuffed.”

He goes on to apologise for the comment.

At least 17 people have been confirmed dead after the fire ravaged the West London tower block on Wednesday morning, but officials fear the death toll could go past 100.

Harrowing stories have emerged of families separated as they fled the horror blaze and terrified residents saying their goodbyes over the phone as flames engulfed the building.

London Labour MP Wes Streeting told : "The words 'get stuffed' pretty much sum up Boris Johnson's attitude to all the concerns that were put to him about cuts to police and the fire service while he was mayor."

On Twitter @Brand_No_7 wrote to Boris saying “You've failed the people of Grenfell Tower - Get stuffed.”

But a Tory source said: "It is outrageous of Labour to suggest that the response of the fire brigade was in any way inadequate.

"They acted like heroes. No one is seriously claiming that they could have done more. Wes streeting should be ashamed. And so should Andrew Dismore.

"In any case Sadiq Khan conducted his own review of the London fire safety plan.  If he felt that the provision in Kensington was deficient he had ample budget to change it."

Theresa May today announced that a full public inquiry will investigate the horrific fire at Grenfell Tower.

The inquiry is likely to be led by a judge and could take several years to unravel details of the tragedy.

The PM said in a statement: “I am today ordering a full public inquiry into this disaster.

“We need to know what happened, we need to have an explanation for this – we owe that to the families, to the people who have lost loved ones and the homes in which they lived.

“That is why I am ordering a full public inquiry so that we can get to the answers, we can find out exactly what happened.”
