ANGELA Merkel has dumped further misery on Theresa May after yesterday's election shambles by saying she wants Brexit negotiations "done quickly".

The German chancellor said the EU wants to talk progress and hold the discussions as scheduled in nine days.

And she further twisted the knife into May by warning the group will defend the interests of its members during the looming divorce proceedings.

After taking a gamble on snap election, the PM now faces having to tear up her plans if she even clings onto power for long enough to set them in motion.

Speaking during a visit to Mexico, Merkel ended her brief period of "polite" restraint from commenting on May's catastrophic poll.

She said: "We are ready for the negotiations. We want to do it quickly, respecting the calendar.

"We were waiting for the election in Britain, but in the next few days these talks will begin.

"We will defend the interests of the 27 member states, and Britain will defend its own interests."

It comes after Merkel was pictured enjoying champagne with Argentina's President Mauricio Macri on Thursday as May battled to keep her place at Number 10.

European Council president Donald Tusk also warned May there is "no time to lose".

The Sun revealed today how Tory grandees vowed to oust hapless May after the General Election disaster — but not for six months.

They will delay axing her for up to a year so the crucial Brexit negotiations can begin.

May and her small team of advisers clung to power last night with the help of the Ulster unionist support.

Despite hopes of a vast majority, Thursday’s nationwide vote saw Mrs May lose 12 MPs leaving the 60 year-old Premier with just 318 seats, eight short of an overall majority of 326.
