Bomb squad tackle suspicious package at McDonald’s just two miles from Edinburgh stadium where Robbie Williams is due to play tonight

Officers were scrambled to the restaurant on Glasgow Road in the Scottish capital after staff and customers were evacuated

BOMB squad cops have stood down after swooping on a McDonald's in Edinburgh to deal with a "suspicious" item in a toilet this morning - just hours before Robbie Williams is due to play at a nearby stadium.

Officers raced to the restaurant on Glasgow Road in after the alarm was raised around 10.20am.

Staff and customers were rushed out of the fast food restaurant for their own safety as cops descended on the scene.

Police later confirmed that they had stood down after establishing the item posed no threat to the public.

Customers were allowed back into the restaurant at around 12.30pm.

A police spokeswoman said: "Police in Edinburgh were called to McDonald's in Glasgow Road around 10.20am on Friday, June 9, following a report of a suspicious item being found in a bathroom cubicle.

"The item has been assessed to pose no risk to the public and patrons were allowed to renter the premises around 12.30pm.

"Enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident."

A McDonald's spokesman added: “We can confirm that the police were called to our Corstorphine restaurant this morning to investigate a suspicious item found inside a bathroom cubicle.

"All crew members and customers were evacuated quickly and safely. The Police have confirmed that there is no safety risk and the restaurant has now reopened and is once again operating as normal.

"We continue to cooperate fully with the Police as their investigation into the matter continues.”

Earlier this week police chiefs confirmed that there would be heightened security and armed cops on patrol at the stadium.

And they said the same measures would be used at tomorrow's World Cup qualifier between Scotland and England in Glasgow.

It comes as cops stepped up their ring of steel to protect the public ahead of a .
