He tweeted six minutes after the exit poll claimed the Tories would be 12 seats short of a majority: "I think Theresa May has won own goal of the season."

Later adding: "Even a small majority would equate to an own goal for May."

Greg Jenner responded to him: "Does Corbyn win save of the season?"

While another Twitter user wrote: "Worst thing she's done since running through that wheat."

Labour's Harriet Harman posted: "Holding my breath! Hardly daring to hope! Theresa May/feet of clay! Downing St removal vans for her!"

Piers Morgan tweeted simply "Theresa's toast" as other Twitter users posted memes reacting to the news.

The BBC's Nick Robinson wrote: "Everyone understandably cautious re exit poll but well placed Labour figure tells me reports from ground mean this sort of result possible."

However others remained unconvinced the exit poll prediction would be the actual result.

One person replied: "Exit poll for the referendum said remain. They aren't worth anything."

Michael Crick tweeted: "Warning: TV exit polls in 1992 & 2015 showed Tories largest party but short of majority, but ended up with small majorities both times."

And Paul Waugh, executive editor of politics at HuffPost UK, wrote: "Tory postal votes really could be the difference tonight. not caught by exit poll and Lab sources worried they cd [sic] make the difference."

In a shock exit poll prediction ahead of the results the Conservatives faced the prospect of a hung parliament.

At 6am this morning it was confirmed.
