Sam said everyone sheltering in the Market Porter pub on Park Street dropped to the ground, saying: "I called the police and told them what I had seen and the mayhem outside.

"After this someone opened one of the doors and people rushed in for cover, one of which was a man whom had been stabbed in the abdomen and bleeding heavily."

The 21-year-old said the crowds were eventually told to run from the scene by armed police, with the young man and his family running for their lives.

He said: "(We were) running out towards Southwark Road; surrounded by blood, shoes, wallets and other items dropped by the fleeing.

"As we got into Southwark Road, the police cordon had been extended, causing us to run for dear life.

"Along the way I had been waving down cabs, but none of which would take us, finally we neared a couple who had just flagged down a cab, and we asked to get in with them hysterically."
