Theresa May vowed to take a hard line against terror following the deaths of seven people on the streets of the capital last night.

But Mr Campbell responded by posting:  “Mrs May is happy enough to tolerate the extremism of the Brextremist Lie Machine newspapers spewing hate day after day.”

The arch Remoaner was immediately pilloried on social media, with Tory MEP Dan Hannan calling it a “new low”.

One user said it was a “stupid and insensitive thing to say”, while another said: “Alastair Campbell continues his reign as one of the nastiest, most pathetic losers in the political sphere, I see.”

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan also took him to task, saying: “You're equating Brexit media coverage with murderous Islamist terrorism that YOU helped promote by waging illegal Iraq War? Outrageous.”

Mr Campbell replied: “No. I am responding to what I thought was an ill judged speech. Who is she saying is tolerant of extremism?”

But 60-year-old deleted the tweet around two hours later and added: “Previous tweet deleted. Agreed it was over the top.

“But was genuinely angry at Mrs May's speech which was highly political and ill judged.”
