JEREMY CORBYN’s devastating plans for a new ‘Garden Tax’ would send food bills through the roof, it was claimed.
Irate farmers said the tax buried in the small print of Labour’s manifesto would leave the agricultural sector with a whopping £6 BILLION bill.
The NFU’s head of tax Michael Parker fears it will “simply increase the cost of UK food production with no benefit for shoppers”.
Labour revealed a proposal to replace council tax with a new Land Value Tax in its election manifesto two weeks ago.
A blueprint put together by Labour campaigners two years ago reveals Mr Corbyn could replace the council tax with a 3 per cent levy on the value of a homeowners’ land – including the garden.
This would result in an average bill of £3,837 across England – a 224 per cent on the current £1,185 council tax.
And for the first time Labour would put the tax on agricultural land – which currently escapes council tax.
Politics Professor Iain McLean claims if the punishing tax is put in place Brits would be “tempted” to sell off their plots to cut bills.
“The LVT might become a tax on gardens,” he said.
