The attack on the Orlando nightclub lasted hours, and by the time it was over, 49 people were dead and another 53 wounded. It was the most deadly mass shooting in modern US history.

The footage was released to , the and  just days ahead of the first anniversary of the shooting on June 12.

The harrowing footage shows survivors of the attack fleeing the building in terror as cops try to contain the shooter.

Others are found hiding in cupboards, while 911 recordings reveal loved ones called police to beg them to save their trapped relatives.

At one point, officers entering the building for the first time scream: "Let me see your hands! Come out with your hands up or you will die!"

Another cop, stationed just outside the nightclub, gives a quick prayer: "Lord Jesus just watch over me."

Survivors exit the building and are patted down by cops to ensure they're not armed - many of them are visibly shaken and in shock.

"Hands up, both hands, put your hands up," an officer says off-camera. "Follow the sound of my voice. Come this way."

The footage is taken from some 15 hours of footage recorded by bodycams on six different officers.

It also includes recordings of police negotiators discussions with Mateen, who conversed with them during the standoff in the bathroom following his murder spree.

He said: "I want to let you know Im in Orlando and I did the shooting. I pledge my allegiance to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi on behalf of the Islamic State.

"They need to stop the US airstrikes. You have to tell the US government to stop bombing."

He goes on to tell the negotiator he has vehicles parked outside that are rigged with explosives and "your people are going to get it" if they attempt to take him down.

"I'll tell you this, they can take out a whole city block almost. I have a vest. It's what they used in France."
