SALES of an exotic garden plant have plummeted because it is believed to be a secret signal that swingers live in a house.
The unfortunate association of pampas grass with liberal sexual practices has reportedly led to a drop in sales.
Plant sellers have claimed that sales have plummeted and some nurseries have stopped stocking it completely as buyers avoid it for fear of the connotations, .
Palmstead Nurseries, a firm which sells plants to garden designers has said ten years ago it was selling an average of 550 of the plants every year but now are as low was 250.
Nick Coslett, the company's marketing manager, has said the plants have fallen out of fashion and it's connection to swinging has played a part.
He said: "I've got no evidence that it was ever used for that - I think it goes back to the fact that it was planted in people's front gardens.
"But there is that connotation, unfortunately."
