Danielle, 15, vanished 16 years ago. Her uncle Stuart Campbell was jailed for life for her killing in 2002.

On Monday it was announced the murdered teen could be found 16 years after she disappeared, with high-tech radar, demolition teams and a police dog drafted in to find her.

However, Danielle was not underneath the rundown block of garages in Thurrock, Essex, where it was feared her twisted uncle had buried her.

The news comes days after her heartbroken parents Tony and Linda visited the search site, which had been sealed off with a giant steel screen by Essex Police.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Worron, head of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate (SCD) said:  "I cannot begin to imagine how difficult this week has been for Danielle's family.

"Our activity here has reopened old wounds and thrust them in to the media spotlight again, 16 years after Danielle's disappearance.

"Sadly we have been unable to end the pain they have continued to experience and we are no closer to knowing where Danielle is.

"But we will continue to be there to support them as we have since Danielle went missing."

Danielle was murdered in 2001 by her uncle Stuart Campbell who was convicted of the killing despite the teenager's body never being found.

Twisted Campbell - who has always refused to reveal what he did with Danielle's body - was jailed for life the following year.

He lived about a mile away from the garage block although it is not thought he owned one.

The fresh tip was similar to one made at the time of Danielle's disappearance which was overlooked by police.

ACC Worron said he was not giving up on the search and will be launching an internal probe to find out why the area wasn't searched in 2001.
