Theresa May vows to create an Extremism Tsar to rid Britain of Islamist terror

Prime Minister will appoint crack squad to create new criminal offences and beef up current laws

THERESA MAY vowed yesterday to create an Extremism Tsar to rid Britain of Islamist terror in same way we “took on racism in the twentieth century”.

A new crack squad will create new criminal offences and beef up current laws to “identify extremists, counter their messages and promoting pluralistic, British values.”

The Tory manifesto states that: “Our enjoyment of Britain’s diversity must not prevent us from confronting the menace of extremism.”

It added: “Extremism, especially Islamist extremism, strips some British people, especially women, of the freedoms they should enjoy, undermines the cohesion of our society and can fuel violence.”

In response the PM pledged to set up a new taxpayer funded Commission for Countering Extremism, adding: “we need to learn from how civil society and the state took on racism in the twentieth century.”

And the next Conservative Government would also clamp down on domestic violence by enshrining it as an offence in law.

Mrs May will also set up an Abuse Commissioner to hold monitor how police and prosecutors handle the issue.

The new commissions came as the Tories promised to spend £1 billion modernising Britain’s crumbling jails, and a new “independent public advocate” will help support victims of major public disasters.

The Serious Fraud Office will be merged with the National Crime Agency and police forces guarding infrastructure like railways, military bases and nuclear power stations are also set to be merged under Tory plans.

Mrs May also signalled a fresh crackdown on foreign criminals entering Britain, and better monitoring of immigrants who have been earmarked for deportation after committing crimes.
