Theresa May has compared the firms to the gambling industry for the problems they cause and pledged to raise funds from an industry-wide levy to “support awareness and preventative activity.”

And she pledged to “put a responsibility on industry not to direct users – even unintentionally – to hate speech, pornography, or other sources of harm.

And tough new laws will be introduced that will give net regulators “the ability to fine or prosecute those companies that fail in their legal duties.”

The manifesto also vowed to “ensure content creators are appropriately rewarded for the content they make available online”.

This meaning Facebook cannot rip off other websites material and charge lucrative advertising on it.

Theresa May wrote: “Where technology can find a solution, we will pursue it.”
