A BIZARRE optical illusion is completely dividing the internet - but what do you see?

Social media users are split over whether there is a wall or a river in the background of this snap of an abandoned party.

On Thursday, German app Jodel uploaded the picture to its Facebook site and cheekily asked: "Is that a wall or a river?"

Before long, web users were gripped but no one can really agree on an answer.

“We can't be certain. The longer you think, the less clear it :O what do you think?” Jodel posted.

However, some claim they have the answer.

Jenny Reilly , of The University of Edinburgh, claims she can even see a boat in the photo.

She wrote: "Between the tree and the grass on the right hand side of the yellow box."

Others claims there are deck chairs "facing the river" which wouldn't be there if it is a wall.

Many are now comparing the photo to that of a dress which divided the internet in 2016.

Celebs including Kim Kardashian, Kanye West and Taylor Swift all joined in a Twitter row - over the colour of the dress.

The outfit sparked a huge online debate as it appears different to everyone who sees it.

The dress that baffled the fashion world

Thousands of people see the dress as blue and black – including Justin Bieber – while to others, including actress Julianne Moore, it appears white and gold.

Nobody can decide if the dress, made by Roman Originals, is blue and black or white and gold due to an optical illusion in the way people see colours.

However, scientists later claimed they had the answer.

Neuroscientist Doctor Pascal Wallisch concluded that the differences in perception are down to our assumptions about how the dress was illuminated.
