The festival marks the start of the 2017 season at York Racecourse and lasts for three days.

One female racegoer opted for a white dress which was decorated with red poppies.

She completed her look with a red jacket.

While another wowed the crowds in a bright blue ensemble.

Prize money over the three days of the Dante Festival has risen for the sixth year in succession, increasing by £45,000 again this year to £1.2m.

The Betfred Dante, the race that gives the Festival its name by honouring the last Yorkshire trained winner of the Derby back in 1945, took place on Thursday.

In April, punters basked in the sunshine at Aintree for the Grand National.

One For Arthur powered home to win the race from Cause of Causes followed by Saint Are and favourite Blaklion.

The fallers included Vicente, Cocktails At Dawn, More Of That, The Young Master, Measureofmydreams and Ucello Conti.

Definitely Red and Shantou Flyer did not finish.

Bookies were given a pasting at Aintree after 14/1 shot One For Arthur romped home.
