Left-wing union chief Len McCluskey claims election will be ‘successful’ if Labour wins 200 seats – which would be the party’s worst result since 1935

His comments will fuel speculation that the left of the party has given up on winning the General Election

TRADE Union boss Len McCluskey has claimed the General Election will be “successful” if Labour wins 200 seats - which would be the party's worst result since 1935.

Unite chief McCluskey's comments will fuel speculation that the left of the party has already given up on winning the vote.

Leftie Len said told : “I believe that if Labour can hold on to 200 seats or so it will be a successful campaign.

“It will mean that Theresa May will have had an election, will have increased her majority but not dramatically."

Mr McCluskey said the scale of the task for Labour is "immense" and admitted "I don't see Labour winning".

Labour in opposition held 229 seats in the last parliament but Mr McCluskey set an even lower threshold for it to be considered a successful campaign.

Opponents of the Labour boss may that see as a signal that he or those around him are preparing to hang on in defeat.

A spokesman for Mr Corbyn insisted Labour was determined to win the election.

The Opposition leader has regularly had to answer questions about whether he plans to continue in post if Labour loses the election as opinion polls, although narrowing, regularly show a large double-digit lead for the Tories.

Mr Corbyn has insisted he plans on winning the election, although he was embroiled in a row over recent comments to Buzzfeed News which appeared to show that he plans to carry on after a defeat.

A spokesman for Mr Corbyn said: "Labour is determined to win this election to form a government that will transform Britain for the many not the few."

Labour revealed plans to “take back control” of the water industry as well as 22 energy networks across the UK – claiming it will cut household bills by £220.

The party will also renationalise the railways and Royal Mail.

But Labour refused to say how much the huge buy-back would cost the country.
