Before answering viewers questions on the show this evening the host said: "You have a phenomenal collection of cook books I heard.

"What I didn't hear, Prime Minister, is your signature dish. Before we go to the calls what might it be?"

Mrs May answered: "Now that is difficult as you see I do have about 100 cookery books and therefore do a whole range of those."

Mr Ferrari pressured her for an answer on the topic, adding: "Donald Trump says 'I'm coming round and I want you to cook us a dish, I'm coming to your house'.

"What would you cook?"

The Prime Minister said: "I might do something like a slow roast shoulder of lamb.

"It's making a really slow roast so it really falls off the bone - absolutely gorgeous."

She has touched on her love of cooking before, and the mountain of recipe books she moved into Number 10.

She said: “I love cooking and can’t wait to get into the kitchen whenever I have a spare moment.”

Her signature dish is slow-cooked roast lamb with garlic and rosemary.

“It’s comfort food, really,” she admits, “but it’s very good.”

Asked to name Philip’s favourite dish, she replies sternly: “Whatever I cook him.”

Mrs May’s favourite TV programmes are Masterchef and Great British Bake Off – and she has cookery books by Jamie Oliver and Yotam Ottolenghi.

But asked about Delia Smith, she snaps: “I am NOT a Delia person. I have a wide range of styles, but I don’t have a single Delia Smith book. She is far too precise for me.”

During the show the Prime Minister opened up about the heartache of being unable to have children – and the pain of losing her parents so young.

In an interview and phone-in session with LBC this evening, the Prime Minister told listeners that it was “very sad” and her faith helped her though the tough times.
