LABOUR’S education spokesman followed in the footsteps of Diane Abbott with another car crash election interview this morning.

Angela Rayner squirmed after failing to answer a simple question and got her figures wrong while being grilled on the same show her colleague came unstuck on.

She appeared on LBC to promote her party’s new policy on class sizes, but floundered when questioned how many pupils it would benefit.

Ms Rayner was asked by host Nick Ferrari and paused for a moment, before saying it would affect "a significant number".

Pressed for a number, the Shadow Education Secretary responded: "There's quite a substantial amount of pupils that are affected.

“I haven't got the numbers on me to hand, but it is quite a substantial amount of children that are in class sizes that are over 30."

This time she was asked if it was 50 or five million it affected, she could only respond again: “It's a significant number.”

The host, who skewered Ms Abbott on extra funding for police officer last week, said: "You’ve said that three times.

“Do you not think it would be a good idea to have a sense of how many people you're talking about?”

She said: “Yeah, well I do have a sense of that but I don’t have the figures to hand, I’m not going to give you the figure.

“No, I’m not just going to pluck a number out of thin air but I can tell you that the number is significant.”

He then revealed the correct figure - 520,445 primary school pupils in England – before asking: "Do you not think you ought to have had that number?"

Ms Rayner simply responded by saying: "I'm not going to play that numbers game."

It comes after Ms Abbott, her Shadow Cabinet chum, was ridiculed after a spectacular car crash last week.

One of Jeremy Corbyn’s key allies was left red-faced after getting her sums totally mixed up after trying to claim a Labour government would fund 10,000 extra police officers with just £300,000 –a wage of just £30 for each officer.
