Labour activist who introduced Jeremy Corbyn on stage quits after she sent string of offensive tweets mocking Jews and black people

THE GENERAL SECRETARY of Nottingham Labour students who introduced Jeremy Corbyn at a campaign event has quit after being slammed for sending a string of vile tweets.

Bethany Barker, who was a key member of her university Labour branch, posted a number of racist messages on her Twitter account.

She introduced the 67-year-old Labour leader at the party’s local election launch in Newark last month.

And the-19-year-old gave a speech to him, a number of the shadow cabinet, and dozens of party supporters.

Mr Corbyn said as he took to the stage: “Thank you for that introduction Bethany and for all that you do in mobilising our student members in Nottinghamshire.”

But in a number of tweets from 2012 – 2014 she wrote a number of offensive messages,

She said in one: “I cooked brandon chicken and rice, supporting the n***** race”.

And in another she said:  “I hate bbc one, f****** c**** black f****** b**** I hate everyone #mayday.”

One even made reference to a “jew cap”.

Yesterday Ms Barker said she had quit her position and had “no recollection” of sending the messages online.

On a Facebook message from Nottingham Labour Students she said: “I’m absolutely horrified and beyond disgusted about these tweets and they are in no [way] representative of the views I hold now.

“I am beyond upset that I could ever say such things.

“I have changed so much since I was 14, I was not nice and my past is something I am ashamed of.”

The national Labour party has been rocked by numerous accusations of anti-semitism – but a ‘whitewash’ report wiped them of any wrongdoing last year.

The party leader was singled out for not providing “consistent leadership” over the hate crime as his own MPs got online abuse and death threats.

And earlier this year 100 Labour MPs signed a pledge condemning the “betrayal” of party values after they refused to expel Ken Livingstone for his controversial comments about Hitler and Zionism.

Yesterday the Nottingham Labour Students group announced she has resigned from her post.

In a statement from them, they said her views were not representative of their members.

Group Chair Jacob Collier said: “We reiterate these comments are not reflective of Nottingham Labour Students members and we will do everything as a committee to ensure that our society is an inclusive and welcoming place fro everyone regardless of their background, ability, age, ethnicity, race, religion, gender or sexual orientation.”

Now all of her texts before April 19 appear to have been deleted.

Today Mr Corbyn launched Labour’s official General Election campaign, pledging an all-out assault on British capitalism.

He promises his Labour government would “demand our money back” in his hard-left campaign rally in Manchester.

Unveiling the party’s battle bus too, he claimed Labour was under attack for “standing up to the elites”.
