Firefighters battling blaze at Glasgow’s SEC Armadillo as Russell Watson concert CANCELLED amid evacuation

FIREFIGHTERS are battling a blaze at Glasgow's SEC Armadillo music venue which resulted in the cancellation of a performance by English tenor Russell Watson.

Four crews rushed to the inferno as smoke billowed from the Clydeside venue on Congress Road from 5.58pm this evening.

The singer tweeted those inside the building had to be evacuated around 7pm, later announcing that his gig was cancelled.

There were no injuries.

He added: "It is with huge regret that due to a fire at The Clyde Auditorium this evening's performance has to be cancelled.

"The fire service are currently on site and we have been advised by the venue it is unsafe to enter the building.

"The important thing is that everyone has been evacuated and is safe. We will of course keep you updated on any developments.

";All ticket holders will be contacted by the venue."

A spokesman said: "At 5:58pm on Saturday, May 6, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service was alerted to a building on fire in Exhibition Way, Glasgow.

"A total of four fire appliances including an aerial appliance were mobilised to the scene.

"Firefighters wearing protective breathing apparatus tackled the flames externally with the aid of powerful hoses.

"The fire has been brought under control however crews remain at the scene to check for hotspots and to ensure the ventilation of the building."

Music fans posted their shock online.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Event Campus said: "We can confirm that a small fire broke out at the SEC Armadillo this evening.

"The building was safely evacuated and no one was injured. Unfortunately the Russell Watson concert scheduled for this evening has been cancelled."
