AN URGENT weather alert has been issued in two popular Spanish holiday islands.

Brit holiday hotspots Mallorca and Ibiza have been put on an urgent weather alert for heavy rain - just hours after Lanzarote received the same warning.

It comes as weather experts said the effects of Storm Olivier would be stronger than expected - with locals and tourists expected to face thunderstorms and hail.

Canary Island Lanzarote was also swamped by "catastrophic flooding" over the weekend, which led to the holiday spot's capital Arrecife being declared a "disaster zone".

The UK government stepped in and issued a travel warning to Brit tourists hoping to visit the island after "unprecedented" conditions.

The State Meteorological Agency has now activated a yellow alert for heavy rains for Sunday night and Monday on Ibiza and Mallorca.

The severe rainfall could leave up to 20 litres per square metre in just one hour.

Weather agency Aemet first announced that Olivier would only leave partial cloud cover and light rainfall accompanied by mud.

But the dangerous evolution of the storm has forced the forecast to be changed.

The Spanish islands faced overcast skies and weak rainfall on the weekend - but this is set to dramatically shift from Sunday night onwards.

Holidaymakers could be struck by severe rainfall and devastating storms.

The unstable weather is expected to be especially strong in the south and east of Mallorca.

Aemet will now activate the yellow alert in these areas from 9pm on Sunday.

On Monday, the severity in Mallorca will increase and the alert will be extended to the interior of the island.

The yellow warning is expected to be deactivated on Monday afternoon - after conditions should improve.

Monday to Wednesday will still face the risk of rain, with temperatures set to dip on Wednesday.

Temperatures will also remain largely unchanged with highs of 23 degrees and lows of 14 degrees.

The warning includes the islands of Menorca and Formentera, where heavy rainfall is also expected.

It comes after torrential rain ravaged Lanzarote, triggering widespread panic and sweeping dozens of cars out of the streets.
