Four in five Brits prefer going on holiday in the UK to soaking up the sun abroad
New research reveals Brits are increasingly leaning towards home holidays rather then expensive trips abroad
HOLIDAYS in the UK are rated by more than eighty per cent of Brits over the stress and spiralling costs of travelling abroad, research suggests.
Almost nine in ten people said they enjoyed holidaying in Britain because it did not leave them feeling exhausted when they got home.
Eight-seven per cent of those polled said fresh air, more family time and less travel left them feeling happier and healthier.
The survey of almost 3,000 people, conducted for outdoor retail store Go Outdoors, also showed a third of people slept better while on a domestic holiday.
VisitEngland estimated that 6.6million Brits stayed in the UK over Easter – a ten per cent rise on last year.
The sinking pound following the Brexit vote meant increased costs also contributed to Brits holidaying at home.
Almost a quarter of those polled in the survey said they felt more connected to their family when they holidayed in the UK.
While 37 per cent of people said worrying about luggage allowances and not speaking the local language for 22 per cent outweighed the benefits of a break.
The research also showed 28 per cent of parents were more likely to take part in outdoor activities such as hiking, camping and canoeing on UK holidays.
And 72 per cent said they would go on long walks during a British break.
Ian Mackintosh, of GO Outdoors, said: “More and more people are now choosing to stay at home rather than go abroad as they find it less stressful and actually get more family time.
“Also, they feel so much more relaxed when the holiday is over. How many times have you flown back from a holiday, got home and said ‘I could do with a holiday’.
“It is healthier for you and for your bank balance.”
