THE final words of a pilot dad who desperately tried to save his young family during a storm as they flew home from Disney World were: "I'm doing the best I can."

Joseph Crenshaw, 45, was flying his wife Jennifer, 43, his son Jacob, 16, and daughter Jillian, 14, back to Tennessee from the Florida resort when he hit heavy rain over Alabama, according to an air accident report.

Mr Crenshaw was told to check his altitude, and the last thing the air controllers heard where: "I'm doing the best I can."
