Three people injured after ‘serious incident’ in Stoneybatter, Dublin, as gardai arrest man & locals in ‘state of shock’
A MAN has been arrested after a "serious incident" in Dublin this afternoon.
It is understood that three people have been stabbed in the Stoneybatter area of Dublin 7.
Two men are being treated in hospital for serious but non life-threating injuries, while a third man is being treated for less severe inquires.
According to local Fine Gael councillor Ray McAdam locals were told to stay inside and lock their doors.
He said Gardai arrived on scene quickly and "swarmed the place", with community Gardai assuring residents they would maintain a presence in the area.
McAdam also said the quick response by emergency services put residents at ease but there's a level of shock and concern in the area.
He said: "There's a level of shock, a level of concern - but the overriding sense here in Stonybatter is one of hope that those who have been impacted and injured will make a swift recovery."
He added: "There's a sense of 'how could something like this happen in our neighbourhood?'"
In a statement this evening Gardai have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
They said: "Gardai continue to investigate all the circumstances of a serious incident which occurred in the Stoneybatter area, Dublin 7 this afternoon, Sunday 9th February 2025.
"A man has been arrested and is currently detained at a Garda station in the North City under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
One person is believed to have been stabbed in the doorway of their house when returning home.
The suspect is believed to have used regular household implements in the attack.
According to reports some victims had their faces slashed.
And sources have confirmed Gardai do not believe the incident is related to terrorism and the attacks appear to be random.
Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan has described the incident as an "awful random attack".
Posting on social media he said: "I am receiving updates from an Garda Siochana about the situation in Stoneybatter.
"The suspect is now in custody and the victims of this awful random attack are receiving medical attention."
Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald has said locals are in a "state of shock".
Posting on social media she said: "Terrible news from Stoneybatter this afternoon.
"My thoughts are with those injured and their families. The community is in a state of shock.
"The Gardai and emergency services are to be commended for their response."
'HEARTBREAKING'
The Social Democrats Spokesperson for Justice, Home Affairs & Migration has also thanked the emergency services for their quick response.
