Cadbury’s and Nestle slammed by shoppers for removing word Easter from their chocolate eggs
FURIOUS shoppers have blasted Cadburys and Nestle for missing the word Easter off their chocolate eggs - threatening to boycott the brands.
Both companies insist there has been no "deliberate decision" to drop the word from their packaging, with Cadbury saying the word Easter is embossed on the actual egg.
But that hasn't stopped irate shoppers venting their anger on social media.
Sue McDonald Tweeted: "@Nestle and @CadburyUK Seems to me these companies are trying to dissociate chocolate eggs from Christianity and Easter. No point buying!
"Chocolate eggs are meant to be symbolic of Easter. I've looked everywhere for eggs with Easter on."
Thomson Parker-Jarvi said: "@Tesco Poor show entire row of chocolate eggs and only one referred to Easter. Shamefully @CadburyUK @Nestle"
Christine hodge wrote: "@CadburyUK and @Nestle have dropped the EASTER out of EASTER EGGS so as not to offend other religions. Since when was EASTER offensive."
Justabelle demanded Cadbury put Easter Egg back on packaging, adding: "We celebrate Easter in the UK so stop this PC crap we're all fed up with it."
The row has escalated after claims Cadbury's annual Easter Egg Trail – a National Trust event which it sponsors each year – was rebranded to the “Great British Egg Hunt”.
But Cadbury has refuted claims the word has been dropped, adding that its website easter.cadbury.co.uk and marketing for the event state Easter.
A spokeswoman told Sun Online: "There is NO policy or any effort to remove or phase out the word Easter from our marketing or packaging and to suggest otherwise is wholly untrue.
"Our packaging includes the word Easter on pack and, importantly, for many of our Easter eggs it is even engraved on the egg itself.
"Not only do our Easter eggs have the word 'Easter' on packaging, our Easter eggs are also only available at Easter time, they are clearly Easter eggs as you can see the egg inside and they largely made in the UK, for the UK market."
She added that images dating back at least 10 years showed there had not been a recent change in packaging.
