A CANADIAN man was caught on camera jumping into freezing water to save his puppy after the pet fell through the ice.

Footage shows dog owner Duncan McIver, from Alberta, plunging into an icy pond before swimming desperately to save his French bulldog Cosmo.

The pup can be seen struggling to paddle as he tries to keep his head above the freezing water when the thin ice breaks beneath him.

Without hesitation, Duncan jumps in to reach him but he falls through ice as he crosses the water to save Cosmo.

Duncan soon gets the animal to climb on a strip of concrete to get relief before they both eventually manage to scramble to shore - drenched and cold, but safe.

The dog rescue was captured by local news CTV by chance - who were in the area to film a generic story on ice safety when the dramatic scene unfolded before them.

CTV Edmonton reporter Angela Jung called emergency services to the park while co-incidentally reporting on a recent increase in ice rescues in the area.

Dog owner Duncan told : "As soon as the ice broke, I just went right in… I think most people would do the same for their dog.

"I think most people would do the same for their dog."

He added: "It's a split second thing. You're not just going to let him die, right?"
