Emergency crews had raced to the scene following a report to Police Scotland of a concern for a person, discovering the bodies shortly after their arrival.

The force said that the deaths were being treated as unexplained and post mortem examinations would take place in due course.

They also said the pair's relatives were being supported by specialist officers.

A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, told the : "The wee girl was a lovely wee thing and very sweet."

Another resident described the incident as "tragic", saying: "The house was dark and the curtains were closed most of the time.

“I think they wanted to keep themselves to themselves."

Police had locked down the area as the house was taped off and forensics officers descended on the street.

A large blue forensic tent was erected in the garden of the home as officers were pictured guarding the property.

Chief Inspector Elaine McArthur-Kerr, local area commander, added: "We understand this incident may be very upsetting and worrying for the people living in this community and would ask anyone with any concerns to speak to us.

"A police presence will remain in the area while we carry out investigations and anyone with any concerns, or information, can approach these officers."

Locals have told how they have been unable to access parts of the scheme after it was sealed off by police.
