Lethal failures

WHAT faith can Britain have in a “Prevent” programme which failed to prevent Axel Rudakubana’s atrocity in Southport?

Three times the monster was referred to the deradicalisation unit due to his fascination with violence, and school massacres especially.

Prevent opted not to handle him because, despite all that, he didn’t seem motivated by terrorism.

Police maintained that position despite the ricin he made and the al-Qaeda training manual he downloaded.

Why — millions were left asking — is a young thug with a document titled “military studies in the jihad against the tyrants”, who butchers three innocent young girls, NOT considered a terrorist?

Many have questions to answer over the horrific murders of Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice da Silva Aguiar.

Here’s one more:

How, when Rudakubana was stopped by his father from taking a taxi possibly to attack the school which expelled him, was he able to catch another to slaughter children days later?

The public inquiry announced last night will, we hope, provide answers.

It must also look into the attack’s disastrous aftermath, including the withholding of information from the public.

Police and the Government must realise the danger of keeping Britain in the dark on matters of huge public interest.

As for Prevent, if it can only tackle hotheads flaunting their extremism, the Government must rethink its remit.

Our real ally

THE second coming of President Trump is a nightmare for the woke Left . . . but it need not be for our Government.

It is true Labour seem to be doing the opposite of everything the tax-cutting buccaneer stands for.

But if they can rise above tribal loathing and accept our “special relationship” is with the US, not their EU friends, their next four years need not be as rough as Trump can otherwise make them.

His tariffs on goods should hurt us less than most, especially the Brussels club.

That will prove a cast-iron Brexit benefit and yet another reason to ignore the demented “Rejoiner” brigade.

But Trump’s justified demands for a huge rise in Nato members’ defence spending will be acutely painful for a Chancellor left with no wriggle room.

She will have to follow his lead and cut public spending.

Labour may further have to swallow Trump binning their insane plan to pay Mauritius to take our Chagos Islands.

And we hope they take heed as the new President bulldozes fashionable wokery and trans lunacy.

That, plus tax cuts and the end of Net Zero follies, will liberate US firms.

If our Government spends years merely tut-tutting, the US will get richer as we get yet poorer.

There are great opportunities for Britain from a US reborn in common sense.

It is vital we seize them.
