It's understood the boy was killed while returning with his parents from Belgium to England.

The family was coming back from a wedding in Antwerp before the deadly crash took place in Veurne (West Flanders), according to Belgian media.

The BMWX5 landed on the roof on a verge between the main road and an exit ramp in the horror crash.

There were no witnesses to the tragedy on the E40 highway and cops were only notified on the crash due to the vehicle's automatic emergency alert system.

Authorities are investigating whether the rollover crash was linked with poor weather conditions at what's been dubbed an "unadjusted speed," according to the local prosecutor's office.

In a statement, cops said: "There were a total of six occupants in the car.

"One of them, a 12-year-old boy with British nationality, was thrown out of the vehicle and died of his injuries."

Emergency services were able to resuscitate the boy, who was one of four in the car, at the scene.

The prosecutor's office said: "The first findings show that the poor weather conditions and aquaplaning on the road, in combination with an unadjusted speed, may be the causes of the accident.

"No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

"The investigation is continuing."

Shortly after the crash occurred, a tour bus with British number plates swerved and scraped a police car that was responding to the initial accident on the hard shoulder of the E40.
