What is the Cadbury National Trust ‘Easter’ egg hunt fiasco and what has Theresa May said about it?

Choco-giant and heritage charity in hot water over allegations of 'airbrushing faith' from holiday

CHOCO-giant Cadbury and the National Trust have met criticism from church leaders and the Prime Minister over the branding of an Easter egg hunt.

The Archbishop of York and Theresa May have laid into them failing to mention Easter in the title of their nationwide event.

But why does Cadbury and the National Trust have egg on its face, and what has been said?

What is the Cadbury National Trust 'Easter' egg hunt fiasco?

Cadbury and the National Trust are running over 250 hunts across the UK in the annual Cadbury Egg Hunt.

But the fact it fails to mention Easter in its title has met with ire from The Archbishop of York.

John Sentamu accused the organisations of "airbrushing faith" and "spitting on the grave" of the chocolate firm's Quaker founder John Cadbury.

But a spokesman for the National Trust said Easter is mentioned numerous times in its marketing literature and on its website, where a "casual glance" shows "dozens" of references.

In a statement Cadbury said it continues to mention Easter in its marketing and is inviting people "of all faiths and none" to tuck into its treats.

What has Theresa May said about it?

On a visit to Jordan, the Prime Minister said in a robust answer that it was wrong to leave out mention of Easter in the name of the event.

“I’m not just a vicar’s daughter, I’m a member of the National Trust as well,” she told ITV News.

“I think the stance they have taken is absolutely ridiculous. I don’t know what they are thinking about frankly.”

She added: “Easter’s very important. It’s important to me.

"It’s a very important festival for the Christian faith for millions across the world.

"So I think what the National Trust is doing is frankly just ridiculous.”
