But Mr Candy, who defected from the Tories on Monday, added: “I cannot further discuss that.

“We were speaking directly.”

One day into his new role, Mr Candy announced he would be making a “seven figure” donation to Mr Farage and blasted the Conservatives over “too many broken promises”.

Asked about the possibility of a donation from Mr Musk, Mr Candy said: “If Elon wants to give it… then of course Reform would be very interested in that.”

Mr Farage added: “Elon Musk is very supportive of what Reform is trying to do, supportive of me personally.

“And we’ve got the connections with him, and Nick’s got good connections with him as well.

“He’s giving us political support.

“We have, at this stage, neither solicited or been offered donations.” It is illegal for most non-UK citizens to donate to MPs.
