Map reveals last known sighting of missing woman, 74, stuck in mud overnight in -3C temps sparking massive search

A MAP has revealed the last known sighting of a missing woman, 74, after she was stuck in mud overnight.

Shona Campbell, 74, went for a walk on the shore of the Solway Firth and got into difficulty in the mud around 5pm on Monday.

It sparked an urgent search for Shona after she became trapped in -3C temperatures overnight.

She was walking near West Moss-Side Caravan Park in Cummertrees, near Annan, Dumfries and Galloway.

Extensive searches were carried out using local and national specialist police resources.

The Coastguard, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service were all drafted in to help with the search.

Tragically, the body of a woman was found in the Solway Estuary in Annan earlier this afternoon.

A formal identification has yet to be made but Shona's family have been informed of the devastating news.

Cops say the tragedy is currently unexplained but they do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 5.40pm on Tuesday, 10 December, 2024, the body of a woman was located in the Solway Estuary, Cummertrees, Annan.

"Formal identification has still to take place. However, the family of Shona Campbell, 74, who was missing in the area have been informed.

"The death is being treated as unexplained but not believed to be suspicious and a report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."

An HM Coastguard spokesman said its search and rescue helicopter from Prestwick was called out at about 17:15 on Monday following a report of a woman stuck in mud by the mouth of the River Nith.

He added that Coastguard Rescue Teams were sent from Annan, Burgh-by-Sands and Portling, as well as the Nith Inshore Rescue lifeboat.

Stewart Bryden, senior coastal operations officer with HM Coastguard, said: "There was a report went into Police Scotland last night at about 17:00 - a 999 call that a lady was in difficulty stuck in the mud on the Solway.

"Teams were quickly deployed on to the scene and searched until approximately 23:00 last night with nothing found."

He said the search had resumed in the morning along with members of police, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Nith Inshore Rescue.

Mr Bryden continued: "We have got a lot of mud and quicksand out in the Solway, it is a quick tide.

"As we know, mud and quicksand moves so it is unpredictable where they can be and how they get stuck."
