MP defends first cousins marrying each other claiming it ‘helps build family bonds’ in debate about ban
AN MP has sparked outrage by defending first-cousin marriages, claiming they build "family bonds".
Independent MP Iqbal Mohamed dismissed the idea of a ban, calling it "ineffective" and "unenforceable".
He instead urged for "understanding" of cultural practices where cousin marriages are common.
His shocking comments came in the Commons as MPs debated a proposal led by ex-Tory minister Richard Holden to outlaw the controversial practice.
The MP for Basildon and Billericay introduced the Marriage (Prohibited Degrees of Relationship) Bill for further consideration.
Downing Street today said the Government could not state its position on the matter but would do so at a later date.

Speaking against the Bill, Mr Mohamed said "forced marriage must be prevented" and the "freedom of women must be protected".
But he argued the issue should be tackled through health awareness and genetic testing.
The Dewsbury and Batley MP said: "The reason the practice is so common is that ordinary people see family intermarriage overall as something that is very positive, something that builds family bonds and helps put families on a more secure financial foothold.
"However, as is well documented, it is not without health risks for the children of those relationships, some of whom will be born out of wedlock.
"Instead of stigmatising those who are in cousin marriages or those inclined to be a much more positive approach would be to facilitate advanced genetic test screening for prospective married couples, as is the case in all Arab countries in The Persian Gulf, and more generally, to run health education programmes targeting those communities where the practice is most common."
Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick told The Sun: "It’s shocking that someone would defend this medieval practice in the 21st century.
"We should have banned this revolting practice long ago. It’s shameful Labour won’t support the ban."
Mr Holden also hit out at the Government, writing on X: "It is simply unbelievable that Sir Keir Starmer and Labour juts do not have a position on first cousin marriage."
