THIS is the "traumatic" moment a cop was crushed by a violent thug driving a white van.

Harrowing screams are heard in footage of the horror hit-and-run in Sale on the outskirts of Manchester.

An officer visited a home at the end of a cul de sac to speak to a woman about Kyle Woods at around 10.30pm on May 5.

The cop left the home around an hour later and got into his police car.

But then the officer spotted Woods driving past him into the cul de sac in his Vauxhall Movano van.

The policeman quickly steered his car to block Woods from getting out of the dead end.

He got out and tried speaking to Woods, who was turning his van around in the cul-de-sac.

But Woods then hit the accelerator and hurtled towards a gap between the officer's car and another motor.

His Vauxhall knocked down the officer and smashed into his car before Woods drove off from the scene.

Bodycam footage shows the officer desperately throwing up his hands before he was sent flying across the tarmac.

The officer suffered a fractured ankle and a number of cuts and abrasions on his legs.

His injuries still affect him several months on, Greater Manchester Police said.

Wood was arrested the next day and was charged with attempted murder.

The charges were later dropped after Woods pleaded guilty to assault and dangerous driving.

Local cop Constable Smith said: "We are fortunate that the officer involved in this disgusting attack did not suffer more serious injuries.

"He is thankfully back serving his community. Our officers put their safety on the line day-in, day-out.

"Woods' heinous actions earlier this year demonstrate what sort of violence they can face from criminals.

"I want to commend all the officers involved in this shocking case, as plenty of work has gone into securing this conviction.

"I am glad Woods is now behind bars, away from the people of Greater Manchester."

Constable Smith added: "He has plenty of time to think about his vile actions."

'HARROWING' SMASH

CPS prosecutor Garry Crawford said: "Assaults against brave frontline officers are unacceptable.

"Today's result should leave would-be criminals in no doubt that those who attack police will face the full force of the law.

"In this harrowing incident, Woods drove his van into the officer, ran over him and then fled the scene.

"In a moving victim impact statement, the officer described feeling excruciating pain.

"He explained that he is still suffering from the physical injuries months later.

"He also detailed the severe psychological impact of the incident, describing it as one of the most traumatic events of his life.

"The CPS worked hard with GMP to build a strong case including eyewitness testimony, CCTV footage and medical evidence.

"The strength of the evidence was such that Woods had little option but to admit what he had done.

"As Woods begins his prison sentence, I sincerely hope the officer, who is now back serving the public, makes a full recovery."
