Father, 34, appears in court charged with murder of daughter Malika Al Kattib, 8, in Wexford & attempted killing of mum

Detective Garda Donal Doyle gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution

A FATHER has appeared in court this evening charged with the murder of his eight-year-old daughter and the attempted killing of her mother in Co Wexford.

Mohammad Al Shaker Al Tamimi, 34, of Lower William Street in New Ross, Co Wexford, was brought before a special court sitting tonight.

Mohammad Al Shaker Al Tamimi, with an address at Lower William Street in New Ross, was brought before Gorey District Court this evening.

Detective Donal Doyle gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.

He said he arrested Mr Al Tamimi at University Hospital Waterford. He charged him this evening in Wexford Garda Station at 5.04pm with the murder of Malika Al Katib and with Aisha Al Katib's attempted murder on December 1 at 1, Upper William Street, New Ross.

He said the accused made no reply to the charges.

The defendant, dressed in grey pants, a blue shawl and wearing black slippers did not show any emotion throughout the short hearing nor did he speak. He kept his head down during the proceedings.

Defending lawyer Tim Cummins made no application for bail with Judge Staunton saying a bail application in a murder case can only be granted by the High Court.

REMANDED

The lawyer successfully applied for free legal aid. He asked the judge to instruct that his client be psychologically assessed on being taken into prison in view of the comments he made during interrogation.

Judge Kevin Staunton remanded Mr Al Tamimi in custody to appear before Wexford District Court via video link on Monday December 9.

Judge Staunton also instructed that Mr Al Tamimi be psychologically evaluated.

An Arabic interpreter translated court proceedings for Mr Al Tamimi.
