THE PARENTS of a seven-month-old boy who died from sepsis because they refused to get him medical treatment for an ear infection have been sentenced to 10 years probation over his death.

Marquita Johnson, 33, and Qwalion Busby, 36, were found guilty of injury to a child by omission after prosecutors said they waited too long to seek medical treatment for their son Naeem Busby's ear infection, reported.

The couple treated him with essential oils and natural remedies rather than antibiotics and the infection turned to deadly sepsis.

Prosecutors said the boy could have been saved if he had been treated with antibiotics.

The couple did not believe in traditional doctors and baby Naeem had never seen a doctor until his death,   reported.

His parents eventually dialed 911 when he was suffering from breathing problems but by then it was too late and little Naeem died at North Central Baptist Hsoital, San Antonio, Texas hours later.

The little lad was only 11.6 pounds when he died on December 23, 2015.

Experts said an untreated middle ear infection had turned into sepsis which had caused skin, hair weight and breathing problems.

Prosecutor Kristina Escalona said that the baby's long list of health problems should have alerted any parent to seek medical help before they did.

She said: "That baby had sepsis. How inconsolable he must have been. How long he must have cried. No wonder he was so dehydrated."
