Police put up cordons and evacuated the nearby premises after the ordnance was found near Pier Road in Southsea, Hants.

Bomb disposal experts were called in to make the weapon safe as officers asked the public to stay away from the area.

The neighbouring D-Day Museum - the only museum of its kind in the UK - has been evacuated as well as the seaside pier and an aquarium.

Cops confirmed that no residential properties have been evacuated.

A controlled explosion will take place later today.

An eyewitness, who did not wish to be named, told the BBC that a 200lb (90kg) bomb was found by a digger during coastal defence works between Blue Reef Aquarium and Hovertravel.

Road closures were put in place in October for the defence works, which will last until 2026, and there is a temporary footpath through the common.

According to the eyewitness, the unexploded ordnance was reportedly found in the construction area and is between 4 to 5ft (1.2 to 1.5m) long.

A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We are currently on scene on Pier Road, Southsea, after a piece of unexploded ordnance was discovered.

"Cordons have been put in place and premises within that area have been evacuated for their safety.

"These include Blue Reef Aquarium, the D-Day Museum, Clarence Pier and parts of the common.

"No residential properties have been evacuated.

";We are working with our partners in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team to dispose of the item safely.

"We are urging members of the public to please avoid the area while this is carried out."
